President’s Message & AGM announcement

As 2017 comes to an end, I reflect on club’s year.  It was a busy and somewhat stressful year for all of us on the executive and those volunteers who organized various club events but we managed to finish on a high note.  The trials of the court resurfacing delays creating havoc with schedules are now a distant memory and we can all look forward to an exciting outdoor season in 2018 on our newly surfaced courts.

I have some important news, to pass along.  After 7 years of diligent and extra-ordinary service as the club’s membership coordinator, Judy Huff will be stepping down.   The executive would like to thank Judy for excellent work on the executive and she’ll remain an active member in the club and in Victoria’s tennis community.  Please let me or any member of the executive is you’d like to take on this vital club position (or run for any other executive position).  The opportunity to be formally elected will be available at our next Annual General Meeting on Sunday, January 22nd from 11AM to Noon at Cedar Hill Rec Centre (after Sunday morning’s mixed social tennis).

While on the topic of membership, it is time to renew your membership for 2018.  Please register through our web site and follow the instructions provided:  http://www.saanichtennisclub.org/membership/

Also news of note is that the club’s ball machine has been repaired and is ready for another season of use.  We also have a powerful cordless leaf blower that will be used to keep the courts as clean as possible over the winter to minimize the need for intensive court cleaning on opening day.  Thanks go to Yutaka and his volunteers for looking after the facilities so well (including recently repairing the fence).  The club is still active through the winter with Sunday morning mixed social tennis while the executive will be busy planning for this coming season.  Since this is your club, we welcome to any suggestions from the members on how we can improve our club.  Please contact me directly at president@saanichtennisclub.org.

I wish everyone all the best for the holidays and hope to see you at the AGM on the 22nd!

Sincerely,
Tim Ebata

STC Mixed Doubles Tourney Starts Saturday!!!

Greetings Saanich Tennis Club Members!  Here’s a quick update on the status of our mixed doubles tourney taking place this weekend.

Our tournament is now on the Internet and can be accessed at:

http://tc.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/tournament.aspx?id=0B667896-3CE1-429E-B66D-7E8CA8D65F40

You will find that this website is the best way to keep up to date on what is happening with the tournament, including updates to match schedules, changes in the draw, and so on.

Speaking of… the first matches are scheduled at 9:30AM on Saturday, August 26; and, yes, you can view the preliminary matches schedule for Saturday on the website.

And don’t forget, the BBQ will be rolled out around Noon on Sunday; and our Master Chef, Larry Huff, will be on hand again to weave his culinary magic. By all means come on down to watch the tennis and enjoy a burger. Cost is free for tourney participants; the rest of us will pay $3.00.  Feel free to bring a treat to complement the barbeque.

Questions? I can be reached at 250-882-0706 or jgshowie@telus.net  See you at the Club! 😊

President’s Message June 21, 2017

“June-uary” appears to be over and summer has started to make its appearance.  This Spring’s weather has played havoc with court resurfacing schedules and nearly all of the club’s planned events for May and June have had to be cancelled, held at different venues, or rescheduled. The forecasted solid sunny weather gives us hope that we may even be playing on our lovely new surface by the Canada Day long weekend if the weatherman can be trusted.

Despite the resurfacing problems, the club executive and event coordinators have been working hard to find other options to keep things running.  I’d like to highlight some of these activities. The popular ladies groups organized by Jane Cunnington and Cathy Nettleton have found work arounds and have continued to play on a regular basis (weather permitting).  The club will also be helping them out by paying for bookings at Henderson until the club courts are ready.  The women’s and men’s league have played without any delays.  The men have 28 participants competing.  Matches are arranged each week by the players on courts wherever they can find them which is the normal protocol.  So far, 22 matches have been played.   A highly successful Davis Cup event was held at Centennial Park on a beautiful sunny Sunday on June 4th.  There was lots of great food, costumes and competition.  I hope to see the photos posted on our Facebook site.  The popular change partners event scheduled for last weekend will be rescheduled for July (22nd or 23rd).

Other upcoming events to note are the club tournament which will begin July 8th through the 16th.  Our new courts will be christened on the “opening day” event at the start of the club tournament on July 8th with food and fanfare.  Chad Brachat, our Junior program coordinator, will begin a new Junior tennis program on Monday July 10th.  The new curriculum was developed by Ed Bakker and looks great and is designed to really engage the young kids.

With all of the delays, regrettably, all of the lessons for May and June had to be cancelled with all of the participants receiving full refunds.  The coaches are keen to resume the lessons program in the near future.
More details and information about signing up for future lessons, upcoming club events and activities are found on our web site.

I want to pass on a big thanks to Eric Holden, Yutaka Yoshida, Jim Howie and the rest of the executive and event coordinators (Jeff Cutler, Cathy Nettleton, Jane Cunnington) for persevering through this difficult spring and thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

I really think the wait will be worth it.  The new court surface will be amazing.  All of the cracks are filled and taped, the “bird baths” are gone, and root barriers have been installed by Saanich to prevent future damage.  The contractor, RADA resurfacing, is working hard to give us the best possible product as soon as they can.

I also want to send out a big thanks to our web master, Sasho Radisavljevic, who has done an amazing job keeping up with all of the updates and revisions on our web site.  And last but not least, I’d like to recognize Judy Huff for her continuing work doing the club registration and liaison with Tennis BC.

See you soon on our new courts!

Tim Ebata
President, Saanich Tennis Club
