STC Courts Rebuild June 8, 2025
After many years of repairs to the Viewmont courts, the courts are finally getting a complete rebuild. This project is being undertaken by the District of Saanich, and Saanich Tennis Club (STC) has contributed $60,000 to the project.
Original projections were that the courts would be available by June, however it was discovered that the subsoil contained high levels of blue clay. The clay will need to be excavated and disposed of at a site in Nanaimo. Due to these unforeseen circumstances, the courts are now expected to be ready around mid-July. Luckily for the club, the significant extra costs involved are the sole responsibility of District of Saanich.
As disappointing as it is to deal this delay, the end result will be even better courts with a solid foundation. This project will also include new fencing, new posts and nets, paved walkway access, and new stairs from the viewing deck to the courts. Upgrades to the parking area will begin later this year.
Due to this delay the STC board has agreed on a compensation formula for those members who choose to leave the club at this time. For those who maintain their membership, there will be a loyalty discount offered on the 2026 membership renewals. The amount of the discount will be decided after the courts have reopened.
Compensation formula for members choosing to leave the club before the 2025 season opening:
- this compensation applies to members who choose to relinquish their membership to Saanich Tennis Club during 2025 because of the delay in the opening of the courts due to the rebuild project
- this compensation needs to be requested before the opening of the courts for the 2025 season
- members who choose to relinquish their membership will receive a refund of their membership dues, LESS $30 ($60 for family membership) which represents the Tennis BC membership that has already been paid by the club for members, and is valid for the full year
- any junior who relinquishes their membership will receive a full refund
- refunds will be made to the credit card used for payment or by cheque
- a member who relinquishes their membership will be removed from the club membership list
- a member who has relinquished their membership and decides to rejoin the club in the future will be considered as a new member, and will need to pay the new member rate
